Community Based Area Forums -
including Market & Coastal Towns Initiatives (MCTIs)

South Kerrier Alliance MCTI The Tin Country Partnership Forum Lands End MCTI Penzance Area MCTI Marazion & District Area Forum St Ives Area MCTI Revitalise! Hayle MCTI The Market and Coastal Town Initiative (MCTi) is a community led regeneration initiative, funded by the South West Regional Development Agency.

In addition, CPR Regeneration, the Urban Regeneration Company for Camorne, Pool and Redruth runs a similar initiave for its area and there are other area forums and partnerships, also run along the same lines.

MCTIs and area forums are not grant programmes to fund projects, although there may be some money to help projects develop. They are community led initiatives helping people organise themselves to prepare and put into practice a plan for the future of their town and surrounding area.

Their plans will cover all parts of community life and should look 20 to 30 years ahead, setting out a vision of what the area should be like and what it will be like as a resident to live there.

MCTIs and Area Forums are………….

About the active and meaningful involvement of the community
Not led by agency staff or public body priorities
About building community skills, experience and partnership working linked to district community plan
About brokering funding, practical help and advice
Not specific amounts of money to match fund projects
About building on and strengthening existing communities
Not about appointing Project Officers to do 'it'
Imposing an external view of what communities should look like.

How Area Forums links with West Cornwall Together and WCCN

West Cornwall Together's main obligation is to deliver Kerrier's Community Strategy and Penwith's Community Strategy both Penwith and Kerrier are using the MCTI process as a way to make sure their community strategies reflect the views of the communities they serve. Therefore, the MCTIs and Area Forums heavily influence the actions within the Council’s Community Strategy and therefore, also influence the work of West Cornwall Together and the West Cornwall Community Network.

What areas do the MCTIs and Area Forums cover?

West Cornwall is probably unique in having such a cluster of MCTi areas. In Penwith there are four areas which have been awarded MCTi status and funding. Where MCTIs are not present, there are Area Forums, thus giving West Cornwall 100% coverage for area based forums of one sort or another. In Penwith they are:

Hayle, St Erth and Gwithian & Gwinear (MCTI)
St Ives, Towednack and Zennor (MCTI)
St Just Parish (including Pendeen), Morvah, Sancreed, Sennen, St Buryan and St Levan (MCTI)
Penzance Parish, including Newlyn and Madron (MCTI)
In addition there is the 'Four Parishes' forum running along MCTI lines, covering Marazion, Ludgvan, St Hilary and Perranuthnoe

The PDC Community Regeneration team is charged with supporting these MCTIs and area forums.

In Kerrier there is:

South Kerrier Alliance, covering all of South Kerrier (MCTI)
The Tin Country Partnership, covering all of North Kerrier, an area based forum supported by CPR Regeneration:
